Metaphysics
An Introduction to Philosophy
Metaphysics: An Introduction to Philosophy, is an
historical introduction to philosophical thinking from the
pre-Socratic era to the present. It approaches the study
of metaphysics through an historical comparison of
philosophical and scientific methods, tracing the development
of the concept of philosophy as distinct from, yet
complementary to natural science.
Throughout the book, the nature of metaphysical thinking is
elaborated in conjunction with specific problems and examples,
many of them strikingly contemporary in character.
The work concludes with an explanation of the moral
dimension of metaphysics, its vital function as the framework
for the most basic criticism of the quality of human life, and
its role as an intellectual activity which establishes the
fundamental connection between the sciences and humanities.
